Born on the island of St. Kitts to Mr. and Mrs. Hodge in the town of Sandy Point, Sylvester Hodge (Socrates) has always been musically inclined. As a young man Socrates moved to the U.S.V.I where he was an active base player for a number of popular bands of the day. Sylvester Hodge(Socrates) appeared here on the seen in 1980 after having moved backed to St. Kitts from the U.S.V.I. He one his first crown in 1981 in the Sandy Point bi-local calypso show and has since been crowned the St. Kitts National Calypso King 3 times, the Federation King 3 times and is currently the reigning bi-local King (this title he has won twice).
In addition to those winnings, he is also the Newtown fest reigning Calypso King and the reigning King of the festivals. He has been twice crowned and is currently the reigning witty Calypso King. In 2001 he was also crowned the Leeward island Calypso King.
Socrates exhumes power when he enters onto the stage, his performances are entrancing and his voice captures your ears with its natural authority. His performances are so powerful that one can call him nothing other than “King”.
He is best known for his popular sociopolitical commentary, his double entondra in his witty calypsos, and is regarded regionally as one of the best if not the best Calypsonian in the federation. He is also a bandleader a composer and arranger.
